Victoria’s Secret is a high street and online based American retailer of women’s lingerie, sleepwear and beauty products.

You may be surprised to read that the company was founded by a man, Roy Raymond in San Francisco in 1977. The storey goes that he felt embarrassed when trying to buy lingerie as a gift for his wife and so opened a mail order catalogue company coupled with male-friendly stores. The first store was in located in Stanford Shopping Center in Palo Alto and was designed from the outset designed to appeal more to the male buyer. Sales staff were especially trained to be particularly helpful towards their male customers and often offered free advice on styles and sizes in order to make them fee as welcome and as comfortable as possible whilst making their purchases.

Following just five years of operations and with six retail stores and a highly successful catalogue, Roy Raymond sold Victoria’s Secret to Leslie Wexner for million. Wexner’s company, The Limited, chose to keep the already successful Victoria’s Secret brand intact. The company’s new owners went for rapid expansion, not just in terms of number of stores, but also by stocking a wider range of products. The traditional lingerie products lines were added to with ranges including sleepwear, evening wear, shoes, tote bags, brassieres, panties, hosiery, cosmetics and perfumes, whilst the popular mail order catalogue was now issued eight times per year. This rapid level of expansion was to make Victoria’s Secret the largest American lingerie retailer by the early 1990′s.

Whilst the early stores were concentrated on the Western United States, the company’s reach now extends across the whole country and beyond. As of writing there are over 1,000 Victoria’s Secret lingerie stores and almost 100 Victoria’s Secret Beauty Stores in the United States, whilst the mail order arm sends out over 400 million catalogues each year.

Their products are now seen as designer wear for the high street, with bag designs echoing products such as the Louis Vuitton Batignolles Vertical or Burberry Satchel handbags and fashion wear allowing those on a budget to look like their Hollywood idols.

Victoria’s Secret International Stores

During 2010 Victoria’s Secret expanded into Canada with ten stores across three cities. Further expansion also led the company beyond the American continent with stores in Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates. Opening in 2012, the UK will get a flagship store on Bond Street (just off Oxford Street), London.

Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show

Victoria’s Secret is famous for its annual fashion show which began in 1995 and is broadcast in a primetime slot on US television. The show is a glitzy Hollywood style affair with lavish sets, music and lighting. The event is a showcase for the company’s merchandise and features top models and world famous music acts. The show packs in a huge amount of stuff, acting as a free Victoria’s Secret ad campaign seen by millions of viewers (and potential customers).

Following public backlash in the mid nineties, the company has ceased to use supermodels in its fashion shows and has also moved away from the use of celebrity models and endorsements. Despite this move, the company still uses supermodels for its photo shoots and promotional material. Often going under the name Victoria’s Secret Angels, the current list of models includes Lindsay Ellingson, Heidi Klum and Rosie Huntington.

Sub-Brands

The company has created many sub-brands for its various products. The PINK sub-brand was founded in 2004 and was targeted towards the late teen age group. The range included underwear, panties, beauty products, make-up, sleepwear and accessories created specifically for that age group, with the intention of creating loyal customers who would grow up with the company.

Many of their most successful sub-brands are within the beauty products ranges, with product lines such as Beauty Rush, Dream Angels, Incredible, VS Attractions and Secret Moments becoming household names.
